Workout of the Week: Laughter Therapy at Gymbox
It’s getting lighter earlier, and darker later, but winter is still hanging on and the weather is keeping a lot of us down. Conquer S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder) with Gymbox’s latest giggle-inducing yoga offering, Laughter Therapy.
Through breathing exercises, movement and a whole load of lol, Laughter Therapy is the not-so-serious yoga workout you never knew you needed. If you’re in need of a quick-fix mood boost, then this 45 minute class is the perfect antidote that will put a smile back on your face and have you in fits of giggles.
Laughing has an array of benefits; lowering blood pressure, improving cardiac health, reducing stress hormone levels, working out your abs, boosting T-cells (the specialised immune system cells in the body), releasing endorphins and producing a general sense of well-being. It has even been proven to be three times as effective as relaxation when it comes to de-stressing – what’s not to like?!
Gymbox’s Group Fitness Director, Hannah Curtis Nunn says:
“One of the best feelings in the world is uncontrollable laughing, it brings people together and creates a connection between everyone in a room. We took inspiration for the class from Laughter Yoga, invented by Dr Madan Kataria in Mumbai, and developed the idea with our Holistic Master Trainer Jess Parkinson.”
“The beauty of laughter is that anyone can take part. There are no cultural or language barriers, it’s something which brings people together and breaks down societal divides. It’s especially effective for those who are incapable of doing other physical activity because of injury or illness, as laughing still gets your heart pumping and burns a similar number of calories per hour as walking at a slow to moderate pace.”
