How sharing positivity can improve the world
For all the bad stories that exist in the world, there are loads of good stories. Try spreading the positive. See how it has a beneficial effect on your mental health if you pass it on and seek it out. By scrolling down endlessly on social media, you can see stories of how some idiot or another aimed abuse at someone, or something. Ask yourself is it true? Is it helpful? Is it kind? Restore faith in humanity and share solution-driven stories. If you’re worried about the climate, reshape stories with tales of positive activism and practical courses of action. The news is unbalanced so let’s be a society that has kindness in its DNA.
We need to know what’s going on in the world, but the negative effects of the news on our mental health are not to be underestimated. We get scared, and fearful people are more likely to give up. Let’s not forget that there are other stories too, less widely shared, which make people who read them feel encouraged, empowered, and energised. Since 2011 I have focused on sharing only positive news. This simple action has the effect of making you feel happier in giving other people hope too. To share that is a kindness – I don’t mean “wishful thinking” but rather hope in action. It’s inspired by content that makes us say, “that worked, that looks possible, I could do that too”, and then take action and complete it. Always aim to be kind, and join us in sharing hopeful stories.
