The benefits of dry brushing, and how to do it
The skin is the largest organ of the human body and around one-third of your body’s daily impurities are excreted through it. Getting your lymphatic system moving is essential for your body to flush out excess toxins and impurities which have built up throughout the day or week. A great way to accelerate this toxin elimination process is by dry skin brushing.
Dry skin brushing gets your lymphatic system moving, gets your blood circulating and has also been suggested as a method for reducing the appearance of cellulite. Dry skin brushing assists with removing dead skin cells, regenerating new skin cells and allows the skin to breathe.
Dry skin brushing is when you use a specialised bristle brush which you rub onto your skin. It exfoliates the outer layer of the skin as well as stimulates blood circulation which assists with healing and bringing new blood to the surface. If your skin becomes inactive, its ability to remove excess toxins is impaired which places extra stress on other organs and on your body as a whole. This is why incorporating dry brushing into your routine should become a regular habit. Dry skin brushing is a great addition to your self-care regime!
When we dry brush, it allows our sweat and oil glands to become stimulated which provides more moisture for the skin while keeping it clean and clear so you have a healthy, youthful glow. Once you start to incorporate dry skin brushing into your routine a couple times a week, you will notice a huge improvement in your skin tone, skin texture and even a reduction in visible cellulite.
Here are some tips to get you started:
- Start brushing from your feet, up your legs and body with 3 firm strokes in each spot. Always stroke towards your heart. This gets your lymphatic system moving and creates movement in the blood.
- Dry skin brushing is best done just before any form of exercise. If you don’t do it before exercise, be sure to take a shower afterwards and apply your body oils for skin nourishment.
- Dry skin brushing is brilliant before a warm salt bath. It accelerates the absorption of the salts into your skin to enhance the benefits of the salt.
