BALANCE’s 5-Minute Essential Guide to CBD
CBD. If you’re in the BALANCE office, these are the three letters you will probably hear most every day. Having boomed in popularity over the last few years (the number of people using CBD oil in the UK is now estimated to have reached around 300,000), CBD products have entered the mainstream and are available in the form of snacks, drinks, tinctures, capsules… you name it.
However, information surrounding CBD can be difficult to find, and even harder to understand. So we’ve put together a five-minute essential guide with all you need to know about the latest wellness superhero.
WHAT IS CBD?
CBD, or Cannabidiol, is one of 113 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. It’s legal in Europe as long as it is derived from EU-approved hemp, and contains no more than 0.2 per cent Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, the principal psychoactive constituent of cannabis that makes you high, and is a controlled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971). However, to be legal in the UK, CBD products, whether they be oils, creams, drinks etc., must have a 0mg level of THC. CBD isn’t psychoactive, and it’s only available over 0.2 per cent by prescription for severe medical conditions, or in its pure, yet illegal, form of a sneaky spliff.
HOW IS IT MADE?
Cannabidiol is extracted from the cannabis plant and mixed with a “carrier” oil, like hemp or coconut, to form a ready-to-use product such as balms, tinctures or capsules.
WHAT CAN IT BE USED FOR?
Its purported anti-inflammatory properties make it a useful physical and mental health supplement for those over 18 suffering from ailments such as migraines, chronic pain and sleep disruption. Recent research has also found that CBD can help those suffering with anxiety by almost immediately reducing symptoms.
HOW DO I USE IT?
Due to rising popularity, CBD products are now available in many forms, shapes, and sizes. From tinctures to topical, each product will be used differently so always read the label before using a CBD product. The absorption rate of the most active ingredients generally depends on which type of product you use. For example, edibles and capsules must pass through the liver before the active ingredient can enter the bloodstream, resulting in a reduced potency before it reaches the brain. For a more immediate effect, try a few drops of your favourite tincture under the tongue. If you prefer a subtle, drawn-out outcome, opt for edibles or capsules. It is important to note that the taste and effectiveness from brand to brand and product to product can vary widely, so always do your research.
WHERE CAN I BUY IT?
Reputable online retailers like Bionativa, CBD Store UK and Hempura stock a range of options, as do high street stores, like Boots, Holland & Barrett and LloydsPharmacy.
HOW DO I KNOW THAT A PRODUCT IS SAFE?
Lab reports for all products should be available, with the best, and most transparent brands making their reports freely available on thier website for all to view.
