7 burning questions you have about massage but are just too embarrassed to ask
There’s nothing like a massage to release tension, boost circulation and reduce muscle soreness. But while some people have no inhibition when it comes to hands-on healing, others are a little more shy.
Here are seven very common concerns massage newbies have but feel too awkward to talk about…
What if I fall asleep?
A lot of people dread the thought of dozing off and snoring mid-massage. But it happens more often than you might realise. You might even drool, too – don’t worry, it’s perfectly normal and your therapist won’t judge you for it.
When you’re having a massage, it’s important to put your trust in your therapist. Falling asleep is a sign that you’re soothed and de-stressed. As you relax, your nervous system releases serotonin and dopamine – ‘happy hormones’ that stabilise your mood and help you feel calm.
If you’re still peacefully napping when the massage has finished, your therapist will gently wake you up. Make sure you take your time ‘coming to’ and don’t feel obliged to leap off the bed, or off the chair, too quickly.
Can I be specific about whether I want a male or female-identifying therapist?
Yes, absolutely. You can request this when you book. It’s important that you feel comfortable and relaxed during your massage and the gender of the therapist might impact this.
At London-based bodywork studios, MASAJ, you’re given the opportunity to ask for a particular therapist. When you book online, you simply check out its Meet The Team page to find out the strengths and specialities of each of its therapists. These areas of expertise might include sports massage, pregnancy massage and deep tissue massage, which may encourage you to try something different in search of your perfect therapist match.
Should I wear pants or go butt-naked during the massage?
This is one of the most common questions asked. Ultimately it’s up to you and your therapist how much clothing you remove, depending on your level of comfort. When you arrive for a massage, most therapists will give detailed instructions on how they’d like you to get ready. They’ll then leave the room to allow you to prepare.
“Many massage treatments are performed with clients undressed down to their lower underwear – pants or knickers,” explains Alice Vaughan, co-founder of MASAJ.
However, to reach areas like the glutes and hips, sometimes the therapist might discuss with you the option of having the treatment without any clothes on. But it’s entirely your preference – after all, the more relaxed you are, the more benefit you’ll feel from the massage.
“The most important thing is that both you and your therapist feel safe and comfortable,” says Alice. “We’ll never ask you to prepare yourself in any way that doesn’t feel right.”
If you do remove your underwear, therapists should ensure you’re sufficiently covered by a sheet or towel.
What if I’m on my period?
It’s perfectly safe to have a massage while you’re menstruating. You don’t have to tell your therapist that you’re on your period but it can be beneficial. Scarlet Amies, MASAJ co-founder, says, “It’s definitely helpful for the therapist to know as there are areas in the abdomen and lower back that can be affected by your cycle.”
In fact, some people specifically have what’s called a ‘menstrual massage’. Focusing on the lower abdomen the therapist applies gentle pressure with rhythmic kneading to help relax the contracting uterine muscles.
If you feel self-conscious about potential leaks, you might want to wear darker underwear or shorts. But most of the time you’ll usually be covered with a towel or sheet.
What if I need to pee during the treatment?
Usually the massage therapist will ask you if you want to nip into the lavatory before the session begins, but sometimes you can’t pee on demand! So if you feel the urge to use the bathroom during the massage, just let the therapist know. Holding it in isn’t conducive to relaxation.
Some people assume that they need to remain silent during a massage. That’s fine if you prefer to zone out, but it’s important to communicate with your therapist. That not only goes for requesting a quick toilet break, but if you feel any pain or discomfort, if you want to shift position or even if you just feel inclined to chat to clear your mind. Do and say whatever comes naturally.
What type of massage should I have?
There are loads of massage types, from relaxing to sports massage to deep tissue. Some of these might include trigger pointing technique, so before you book in it’s a good idea to ask questions and make sure you’re booking in for the session you need.
The aim of trigger pointing is to release tension from tight muscles and knots by using direct pressure to the area. It reduces the blood flow to the muscle – when it’s released it allows fresh blood to run through the muscle, which feeds the muscle with oxygen and nutrients. Not only does this feel amazing, it will give an instant relief.
I haven’t shaved my legs – is that a problem?
Not at all. It’s perfectly okay to have hair on any part of your body and won’t hinder the massage treatment. The same goes for bikini lines, underarm hair and toes! It’s totally natural. And just remember: therapists see bodies of all shapes and sizes – nothing will shock or surprise them.
