IN THE CHAIR – Episode 1: Talking Sleep and Managing Anxiety with Lisa Sanfilippo, psychotherapist and sleep expert
Each week a different expert joins host, Sophie Scott, to share their insights and techniques on how to look after your mental and physical health during the COVID-19 pandemic.
If you’re anything like us, your sleep may well be suffering at the moment, as you adapt to a new routine and struggle to dial down all the thoughts and concerns buzzing around your head.
That’s why our first episode kicks off with Lisa Sanfilippo, psychotherapist, sleep expert and renowned yoga teacher, talking about how to create healthy sleep patterns and manage the body’s stress response in the midst of a crisis.
Having struggled with insomnia for much of her adult life, Lisa has worked tirelessly (forgive the pun) to help her students and therapy clients find ways to better manage their anxiety and enhance the mind-body connection. She regularly draws upon neuroscience, biomechanical alignment, anatomy and mindfulness, and is the author of best-selling book, Sleep Recovery (Bloomsbury/ Green Tree, 2020).
In this interview, she talks with compassion and humility about the mental and emotional aspects of sleep, and how these relate to physical tension and our nervous system’s responses. She also touches on breathing exercises, at-home yoga practices and how to embrace all your feelings, including fear and tension, during challenging times.
If you’re looking for useful, practical tools at this time and a truly insightful conversation, watch the full interview here.
