3 BALANCE staffers tackle their indoor air pollution problem
With the new-found knowledge that air pollution inside our homes can be up to five times worse than outside¹, three members of the Balance team put the new Dyson Pure Hot & Cool™ purifying fan heater through its paces.

At 23 years old, my life is pretty busy and although I am conscious of what I put in my body and the way I move it, the quality of the air I breathe isn’t something I have ever considered… until now. When I plugged in the new Dyson Pure Hot & Cool™ purifying fan heater, I expected it to take a couple of days to feed back on the quality of air in my small and sweet south-west London flat. The truth is, it whirred into action, wasting no time to alert me to the fact the air quality in my bedroom was ‘INCREDIBLY POOR’. That wasn’t surprising once I considered I had set it up alongside my dressing table and myriad perfumes, aerosols and make-up.
I can’t believe what a difference the Dyson Pure Hot & Cool™ has made to my attitude alone, and I’ve made several changes to my habits, thanks to the live air quality updates supplied by the Dyson Link app. For example, since witnessing the volatile organic compound (VOC) spike every time I spray an aerosol, I have switched to a natural deodorant, and stopped lighting scented candles before bed as that also appeared to cause an increase in the activity levels of the Dyson Pure Hot & Cool™.

The vagaries of living in London means air is more polluted when compared to the rest of the country (in my opinion, it’s a small price to pay for living in the greatest city on the planet). And by having the new Dyson Pure Hot & Cool™ purifying fan heater set to “Auto” mode, it continuously works its magic, meaning I can breathe a sigh of relief. And, thanks to the Dyson, it’s a cleaner sigh.
We’ve really noticed it comes into its own when we’re cooking or doing housework. The air quality where we live is generally good. However, if we’ve been preparing a meal or spraying cleaning products, you’ll notice the on-screen real time air quality reporting goes from positive green to stark red as it’s triggered by the gas hob and cooking odours, or the VOCs from our cleaning sprays. It’s Dyson’s way of telling you the air quality has taken a tumble, and the machine is going to do something about it. Sure enough, natural harmony is soon restored, unseen indoor airborne particles are removed from the scene, and we’re back in the green.
What’s immediately striking about the Dyson Pure Hot & Cool™ is how it looks. It’s a domestic showpiece we’ve (mostly) kept in the living room and it instantly adds elegance and class. On closer inspection, it only gets more beautiful, thanks in part to the swooping loop design, but also due to the LED display, which keeps you abreast of live air quality in your home, lighting up every time a pollution source is detected. This can also be monitored and controlled remotely via the Dyson Link app, which allows me to set schedules to clean and heat the living room before we get home.
MEET HENRY, VIDEO PRODUCER
Living in a communal warehouse with nine others comes with highs, lows and house rules. One of our more lenient decrees is we allow smoking indoors and while I am conscious of secondhand smoke, what surprised me when the new Dyson Pure Hot & Cool™ purifying fan heater was turned on was all the other unexpected pollutants it picked up on, such as the VOCs from the cleaning products and the chemicals that can be released from the paint my housemate uses for his art.
It has opened my eyes to the previously invisible indoor particles in my living space, alerting me when there is a spike in airborne pollutants, which I’ve noticed usually happens whenever anyone is cooking downstairs and the smell seeps through the (badly insulated) walls into my bedroom upstairs. When this happens the Dyson Pure Hot & Cool™ kicks into action, and I can monitor the situation by checking the Dyson Link app on my smartphone. The app also lets me set a schedule, so I can heat and clean my room just before I go to bed.
Overall, the Dyson Pure Hot & Cool™ has increased my awareness of our indoor air quality and hey, at least I can rest easy knowing my contribution to the house is improving the air quality. Well, that and my tunes!
