Insider secrets: How to hide a hangover
You know how it is, I’m sure. What starts as a quiet evening out with friends ends up involving several bottles of montepulciano, a few tequila shots and a karaoke recital you wouldn’t believe.
The good news, however, is we can rebuild you. Working in the beauty industry I’ve learned the odd trick about hiding the signs of a hangover over the years. My mantra when I’ve had too much to drink (apart from the ‘never again’ one we all have) is hydrate, invigorate, disguise.
GYM ALTERNATIVE
Hydration is crucial because skin is around 64% water and alcohol’s dehydrating effects rob it of the moisture it needs to function correctly, leaving it looking dull, lifeless and dry.
Downing plenty of filtered water first thing will help, but a breakfast of fresh fruit, orange juice or cactus water will provide moisture and skin-saving antioxidants – handy because booze depletes the vitamins needed for healthy cell function.
It’s also crucial to get the circulation flowing, partly to bring blood (and nutrients) to the surface of the skin to re-invigorate it, but also because the lymphatic system is responsible for the removal of toxins within deeper layers of the skin.
If hitting the gym is a terrifying thought (it certainly is for me) get the circulation going by alternating between hot and cold water in the shower and pep up skin with a face scrub before sealing in some moisture with a hydrating moisturiser.
SORT IT WHILE YOU SLEEP
Eye bags can be tackled with an eye gel (lighter and more cooling than a cream). Keep it in the fridge to boost its effectiveness.
The ‘disguise’ bit in my mantra inevitably involves make-up – no longer the preserve of women (in fact, once a man discovers the likes of Tom Ford’s Concealer For Men it’ll soon become part of his grooming armoury.)
Naturally, prevention is always better than cure when it comes to hangover skin so slap on an antioxidant-packed restorative night cream before you topple into bed.
Skin switches into repair and recovery mode while we sleep so this is the optimum time to counteract some of the damage done by drinking. Your skin will thank you for it on the morning after the night before.
FROM THE INSIDE OUT: Alcohol dries out everything; skin, hair, even your brain. Get a hydration boost with a fish oil tablet or B12-complex vitamin while you get ready to go out. You will look fresh for the next day
