4 steps to reducing stress for a better night’s sleep
We’ve all been there: strung out by the vagaries of life, only to find sleep hard to come by when we finally lay down at night. Various studies suggest the link between stress and sleep is real with 73 per cent of people reporting that they experience stress followed by a restless night at least once a week*.
Luckily there are many ways to help you manage those stressful life moments and ensure you get your quality Zs:
1. BEST FOOT FORWARD
Even if you feel like you can’t take a full hour at lunch, try to at least pop out for a mindful walk. Take deep breaths, properly take stock of your surroundings, and aim to be present in the moment. There are several walking meditation audiobooks you can download too.
2. ON A BREAK
It is recommended that you take a desk break at least once every 90 minutes. Regularly stepping away from your desk is vital in the battle against pressure in the workplace.
3. HIGHS AND LOWS
For most, the final co ee of the day is around 5pm. More recent studies have found that caffeine can still be in your system seven hours after consumption, so we’d suggest making your last co ee around 12pm.
4. NATURAL AID
Manage your emotional wellbeing by trying a natural aid such as RESCUE® Remedy.
RESCUE® Remedy is a blend of five BachTM Original Flower Remedies, which are useful when you find yourself feeling overwhelmed. The brand was created more than 80 years ago, and the five RESCUE® flower essences are part of a wider collection of 38 floral remedies discovered by Dr Edward Bach to help manage a range of emotions.
“I’ve been using RESCUE® Remedy for a few months,” says BALANCE editorial assistant Georgia Lockstone. “If I find myself getting tense, I put a few drops in water to sip, or take a desk break and have a RESCUE® Remedy pastille. These help me stay focused. Then, before bed, I use the RESCUE® Night Spray to help me switch off.”
“The key to a good night’s sleep is depth and quality. The most efficient way to introduce an effective evening routine is to go back to basics and take into account all the factors that can cause disturbed snoozing.” Neil Shah – Chief de-stressing officer, The Stress Management Society.
