The importance of self-love
Amid this sometimes still-chilly part of the year, I think it’s wonderful that we have a day dedicated to the warm glow of love. It is an opportunity to pause and allow ourselves to consider everything we love – the people, places and experiences that we cherish and which soothe and nourish us. Every day this month, why not ask: do you allow yourself enough time and space to do the things you love, see the people you love and visit the places you love? Of course, it is not always easy or possible to do so, but sometimes we just need to remind ourselves to make a little space for these things.
Try… This February, why not focus on self-love? Set aside some time to consider and take pride in your achievements, skills, talents and qualities. Recognise it is OK to doubt yourself sometimes, too, and that self-love is not about comparing yourself unfavourably with others – it is self-focused, not other-focused.
Take some time to write down all the things you love and appreciate about yourself. It might feel uncomfortable or silly; don’t worry, no one needs to see this except you. So often we punish ourselves with harsh criticisms, so give yourself the praise and appreciation you have earned. Love yourself, you deserve it!
