Tortoise ThinkIn – Film and TV: Where are the women? #FORAHER

This year, Captain Marvel – the $150m blockbuster – will become the first ever Marvel movie to star a woman in the title role. Meanwhile, female-centred films and TV shows are storming ahead in the box office and sweeping up awards. A year on from the #MeToo movement which shook Hollywood to its core, it seems that the tide is beginning to turn for women in the entertainment industry, at least for those on screen. But scratch the surface and the picture changes. Among the production teams behind the top 100 highest grossing films of 2018, women represented 15 per cent of writers and 4 per cent of directors. In TV, women make up around 27 per cent of people working behind-the-scenes. Can the industry really change when women aren’t the ones making the movies?
