4 epic ways to spend the next few weekends
The hottest UK day ever is now a mere memory, and we can finally focus on the important things, like making the most of your precious weekend. So with autumn on the horizon, challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone and take full advantage of London living. From cross-cultural sharing to philanthropic fitness, these events will reveal the diversity which exists all around you.
Japan Matsuri – 29 September
This popular (and totally free) Japanese festival lands in Trafalgar Square for another year. Grow your Oriental understanding with games, art, music and delicious food, or try on a kimono to experience traditional fashion. With stage performances, shopping stalls and a themed focus on “future generations,” this is an all-round great experience for everyone.
Totally Thames – Until 30 September
Back for a fifth year, this festival boasts a line-up of artistic, historical, fitness-focussed and musical events throughout the month, from swimming and paddleboarding in the Thames, to learning the history of London’s iconic river. Highlights for BALANCE include the performance-laden Kingston River Heritage Festival and the exploratory Barking Stink exhibition.
London Black Food Festival – £6-9, 22 September
After touring North America and Europe, the hit festival finally lands at London’s Oval Space. Artificial colouring has no place here, as each vendor only uses natural ingredients like black garlic, charcoal and coffee to create the perfect monochromatic palette and push the boundaries of food and drink alike. Each ticket includes samples from vendors, so get ready for a smorgasbord of dark-coloured deliciousness.
Urban Rush 15-mile Run – 6 October
Admire major landmarks throughout this scenic Central London race, as you raise money for Shelter, the charity fighting homelessness in the city. Starting in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, and ending alongside the Thames in Putney, the open-road route offers beautiful views of the capital. Before the race, utilise Shelter’s complementary training plan and enjoy a well-deserved sports massage after you’ve crossed the finish line.
