The eco-running Scandi trend you should already know about
Another day, another portmanteau. Plogging is the latest trend to come from Sweden and we’re fully on-board. Combining the Swedish word for picking up litter — ‘plocka upp’, with the Swedish word for jogging — ‘jogging’, it’s basically running and clearing up rubbish.
Created by Erik Ahlström, who decided that a simple old-fashioned jog could be improved with a plastic bag and a pair of gloves, the plogging trend started as a hashtag and has now been used over 18,000 worldwide.
As well as benefiting the environment, it requires a variety of body movements that your average jog doesn’t, including forward folds, arm work, squatting and stretching.
‘It’s something that someone of any age or fitness level can do, as you can speed up or down as you wish. For those wanting a higher intensity workout, you can incorporate sprints in between ‘pick-ups’, or you can alternate walking and jogging, it really is down to you’, says one of the plog pioneers, Maja Hesch.
‘I’ve always loved being active, and the way exercise makes me feel, but what’s really special about this is that I’m actually doing my own small bit for the planet at the same time. It’s a way of paying back for the enjoyment I derive from exercising outside. It’s also a great way to be sociable.’
