How to have sex when you’re on your period
Period sex can be a tricky one. You and your partner might be totally cool with it. Both of you might be totally grossed out by the idea. Maybe one of you is up for it but is having no luck convincing the other.
Of course, you can have sex on your period just using condoms or other protection, but it can get a little messy. For those who do need that little bit more convincing to get jiggy with it whilst the painters and decorators are in, the world’s first ever reusable menstrual cup, that can be worn during sex, might be just what you need to tip the balance.
ENTER THE ZIGGY CUP
Ziggy Cup, by leading feminine hygiene company INTIMINA, is the first cup of its kind that not only gives its user 12 hours of non-stop menstrual protection, but also the ability to have penetrative sex, completely mess free.
Kathryn Byberg, Global Brand Partnership Manager for INTIMINA says, “a woman should feel free to make the decision that they feel most comfortable with, whether that means having sex on your period or not. Many women are scared of the idea of having period sex due to the blood, which is why products such as the Ziggy Cup can make both parties feel more comfortable, as they can be intimate no matter what time of the month it is.”
Unlike the traditional tampon or menstrual cup, the Ziggy Cup sits just below the cervix where its soft rims create a seal, preventing any leaking.
In years gone by, many people have looked to single-use discs for menstrual protection during sex. The eco-friendly Ziggy cup, on the other hand, is made from petal-thin, 100% medical grade silicone, making it comfortable to use and virtually undetectable throughout the day and during intercourse, and can be re-used for up to 2 years, helping to save both the planet and your money.
There are multiple benefits from having sex during menstruation (apart from satisfying the obvious), including relief from menstrual migraines and cramps, and even a shorter period. Katheryn explains, “when we orgasm the body releases oxytocin, dopamine and endorphins which help to relieve any period related pains. These hormones are actually far more effective and stronger than any over-the-counter painkillers! Sex on your period can also shorten the length of your period. With each orgasm your uterus contracts and expels the blood and uterine lining at a faster rate than it naturally would during your period. Not only this but period sex will flush out the compounds in the uterus that cause period pain in the first place.”
Just be aware that the Ziggy cup does not protect against STI’s or pregnancy. Katheryn advises, “you will still need to use other forms of protection such as a condom. We recommend that you speak to your GP for advice on STI’s and pregnancy.
So, if you’re curious, why not give it a go? You’ve got nothing to lose!
