How to Trust in Your Life with Gabrielle Bernstein
ABOUT ME
In my early 20s, I ran a PR firm representing nightclubs in New York, got caught up in the party scene and became addicted to drugs and alcohol. When I hit rock bottom at 25 and decided to get clean, I turned to meditation, a practice I had been introduced to growing up but hadn’t kept up. I also studied the metaphysical text A Course in Miracles by Helen Schucman, which changed my life. I decided to share my story and have now written six books, appeared on Oprah’s Super Soul Sessions and toured the world to spread my message that the Universe has your back.
STEP ASIDE AND SURRENDER
The Universe won’t step in until you step aside and stop trying to control the outcome of a situation. The secret is to forget what you think you need and instead ask for what is of the highest good. I start each day with a simple prayer: ‘Where would you have me go? What would you have me do? What would you have me say, and to whom?’
FOCUS ON WHAT’S THRIVING FOR YOU
Instead of obsessing about your problems or a lack of something in your life, redirect your focus on what you already have going for you. The more we celebrate our lives, the more there is to celebrate.
REFRAME YOUR SETBACKS
When we recognise that obstacles are detours in the right direction, we find our path more easily. I spent a long time trying to get pregnant, becoming increasingly frustrated that it wasn’t happening. Then I realised I had more healing work to do to become the mother I wanted to be. The Universe has a plan far greater than your own – trust that any detours are part of it.
ASK FOR A SIGN THAT YOU’RE ON TRACK
Whether it is a line from the lyric of a song you hear on the radio or a slogan on a billboard that speaks to you, the Universe is always guiding us in the right direction – ask for a sign and pay attention.
FLEX YOUR FAITH MUSCLE
When you think you’ve surrendered, surrender more. Let go of any remaining beliefs or behaviours that aren’t serving you. Faith is a muscle that grows stronger the more we exercise it.
5 TIPS TO FEEL GOOD
Start now: Choose a better feeling, thought or action and build on it.
Give thanks: Write a journal about the good things, or send someone a thank-you note.
Shift focus: When you feel helpless, help someone else.
Be creative: Sometimes putting on a great song and dancing is the quickest way to raise your energy.
Daydream: Visualise something that fills you with joy or excitement.
