Founder Focus: Jody Shield
Meet Jody Shield, the straight-talking Business Director turned wellness entrepreneur, success coach, author, inspirational speaker and host of the ‘She’s Electric’ podcast.
After 10 years in the corporate world, in 2013, Jody founded her monthly meditation sessions in London to make mindfulness accessible to millennials. From there her brand grew as she pioneered the wellbeing movement across the globe by working with brands such as Nike, Lululemon, Kikki K, WeWork, LiveNation, the Shangri-La, Gili Lankanfushi Resort in the Maldives and becoming the first ever European Meditation Ambassador for Lululemon Athletica.
Unlike our Founder Focus’ with a tangible product to sell, Jody is on a mission to effect change by teaching simple and accessible spiritual techniques to radically transform your life. We sat down with Jody to find out how she was able to realise her own full potential.
WHAT WAS YOUR EUREKA MOMENT?
When I was in the Amazon jungle in Peru, in a plant medicine ceremony facing ‘myself’ and all my deepest fears, and I thought ‘life is too short, and I need to stop worrying about what could go wrong and start focusing on what could go right!’
Then and there I realised I had to quit my corporate job and create a business in wellbeing.
WHAT WAS YOUR ELEVATOR PITCH?
I didn’t really need one, but if I did, it’d go a little like this: ‘You are the creator of your own reality, you’re living a life you have created and if it’s not the life you want, you can absolutely choose to change it. It’s simple really. We love to over-complicate things, hold ourselves back, in turn, believe we’re inadequate or not good enough but it’s on you to find that inner strength to stand up and say, enough is enough. I’m ready to be happy, fulfilled and tap into the best version of myself. I’m here to help you do that! In a simple, accessible and relatable way. Life can be easy and effortless – stay open to that possibility’.
HOW DID YOU KNOW IT WOULD WORK?
It doesn’t take a genius to see that the majority of us are burned out, stressed, disconnected and living in fear. Here’s the juicy bit though, many of us wear our fear like old, familiar clothes and are reluctant to take them off. We are searching for answers, insights, a-ha moments but I’m here to remind you that you already have those answers. You just need to access them.
DID YOU HAVE A MENTOR OR ARE YOU A MENTOR?
I am a success, business and leadership coach, and a mentor. And I believe it’s essential to have a strong team supporting you. I have my own business coach, sales coach to help with my digital products, and various mentors I check in with once a month. In my experience, we grow and expand the most when we feel supported.
WHAT IS THE MOST WORTHWHILE INVESTMENT THAT YOU HAVE MADE?
Hiring a business coach, it was the biggest investment and still is one of them. My coach is an extension of my team and is a member of the staff. And the return on investment when you work with a great coach can by 20 x the investment. We have to invest in ourselves and our careers to grow.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE THINKING OF STARTING THEIR OWN BUSINESS?
Get out of your own way. By this I mean, do the inner work to release your fears, self-limiting beliefs and that little voice that doubts every move you make. Hire a coach
to help you make it great. Meditate, connect to your spiritual self, and find that faith.
WHAT ONE FAILURE ARE YOU GLAD YOU EXPERIENCED?
I’ve had so many failures along my path to success. A big thing I did was expand the business too fast, I took on too many staff and suddenly had five peoples wages to pay when I was not ready. So I scaled back, let go of people and then rebuilt the business much slower.
WHAT PIECE OF INDUSTRY ADVICE DO YOU OFTEN HEAR BUT DISAGREE WITH?
‘Fake it till you make it’. I get the idea but why not show up with a curiosity to learn more and be honest? Your authenticity will be rewarded and you’re more likely to learn from people. Be honest. You don’t need to fake it!
WHAT IS THE BOOK YOU WOULD RECOMMEND THAT EVERYONE READS?
Secrets Of A Millionaire Mind by T Harv Eker is awesome, as is You’re A Badass At Making Money by Jen Sincero.
I am hot on money at the moment, I’m writing a money programme because it’s one of the topics that people have fears about. Let’s change your money stories into positive ones, so you can co-create with money, rather than buy into the beliefs that say you don’t “deserve” it, or that repel it away.
TALK US THROUGH YOUR MORNING ROUTINE?
I wake up around 6.30am, drink hot lemon and water, meditate for 30 mins, do some EFT tapping, read a manifestation script detailing all the GOOD things I want to create in my life, have a shower, deep breathing all the way and practice gratitude for all the cool stuff happening in my life.
