Sustainably Influenced: A Discussion About Mindful Wardrobe Choices

Is there a link between our insatiable appetite for the “next new trend” and social media influencers posting daily outfit looks which can be purchased in a matter of seconds? Are apps like Instagram luring us down a path of over-consumption and neglecting to do their bit for the environment? How can we as influencers/consumers be more conscious about our fashion choices?

While clothes were once seen as a long-term investment, the consumerist society we live in now has created a culture of “fast fashion” –we buy cheaper garments for short-term use before replacing them with the next trending item. The fashion industry is thriving with clothing production doubling between 2000 and 2014.
