The only nutritional supplements you really need to use
Are you a supplement junkie? Get swayed by labels and hype offering immediate relief and/or superpowers? There are a vast array of wonderful herbs and plants that have beneficial effects for us, so it’s easy to become a supplement over-user.
I admit to getting a tad over-excited when a new product catalogue arrives, reminiscing over old forgotten favourites while hotly anticipating using the newer formulations. However, once common sense kicks in and I’ve calculated cost of all the things I’ve just listed to give me better skin, hair, mind, sleep and relationships (I’m doing OK on the super power front), the list gets wiped, and I remember less is more in oh-so-many ways.
Trends happen in supplements just as in any other business arena, and it is easy to be drawn into the novelty. The challenge is sorting the great and good from glib marketing bumf and choosing quality over value for money.
Ultimately, it is all about cellular health, cleansing, rebuilding and maintaining optimum cell activity.
Paring it down to the essentials, this is my personal collection of tried-and-tested supplements, those that return the most bang for your buck (I should add that I do not financially gain from mentioning any websites or products, I do so because they are ones I use and have done for years).
The Greens
The majority of us live and work in toxic conditions. We are bombarded by unseen electromagnetic pollution – from within our homes and environment but also from whatever is up there circling in space. Our bodies are being compromised in ways that have never before happened in human history.
Consider this in the context that 95% of the functions in our body rely upon minerals. Minerals are essential for vitamins to do their work. Yet our food has long been minerally depleted, and many supplements include rock-based minerals rather than plant-based. This means they are ineffectively assimilated by the body.
The supplements below are powerhouses of goodness, thanks to their high chlorophyll content. I use one of these daily, alternating as the mood takes me. The micro algaes are nutritionally supercharged, packed with vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and amino acids. Chlorophyll builds red blood cells and oxygenates the body.
The Minerals
Most of us are very deficient in magnesium, iodine, zinc and silica, which all play pivotal roles in good health.
Magnesium spray can be used liberally ( 5 to 20 sprays) on your skin. It is absorbed rapidly.
Electrolytes Magnesium, sodium and potassium are often out of balance in our bodies. This liquid is a must-have for its energy giving propensities.
Diatomaceous Earth is a very affordable source of silica but also a great detoxifier which destroys internal parasites. It has the added advantage of being practically tasteless.
Nascent Iodine is considered the most safe and effective form for internal use.
Vitamin D Though whenever possible I get this vitamin for free, from the sun on my bare skin.
The Herbs
Our liver and kidneys are essential organs to support – when the chi is strong in these it impacts the whole body. Goji berries and turmeric tonify the kidneys and liver respectively, but have many other benefits, as is usually the case with a natural plant source.
Both Schizandra and Ashwagandha are adaptogens which mean they balance the bodily system -choose one or the other as it’s not necessary to take both. I prefer herbs in tincture form and any other supplement as a powder, but capsules may be the way for you, as some of them are very potent in taste.
Budget Basic Essentials
These are all excellent in helping create an alkaline environment within our body, great digestion, and regular expulsion of toxic matter.
- Organic apple cider vinegar – for optimum benefits, take 2 – 4 teaspoons in a little water 15 minutes before eating
- Multiple daily lemons, limes, kiwis, or camu camu powder
- Sesame seeds for calcium, magnesium and zinc
- Magnesium Oil can be made at home from magnesium chloride flakes. Simply use equal measure of flakes to hot distilled water, stir until dissolved, cool and pour into a suitable spray bottle.
- Diatomaceous Earth (as above) halve the daily amount so it will last a long time and on days you feel you need more of a purge, take 4 teaspoons and drink plenty of water.
- Himalayan or Celtic sea salt
With some of the above you will feel the effect in a couple of days, others it may take a month or three, but make a difference they will. Obviously, keeping your diet as clean and healthy as possible, will expedite and magnify the effects of supplementation.
