5 minutes with Gemma Atkinson
Earlier this month we headed to Chel Ski in South London for an afternoon of indoor skiing with Gemma Atkinson.
After an hour on the ‘slopes’, we caught up with the Strictly star to find out how she fuels her training and the healthy habits that have helped to build her body.
HOW DID STRICTLY COME DANCING CHANGE YOUR MINDSET AROUND FOOD AND FITNESS?
Strictly had a really positive effect on me. It was amazing that I had the confidence to perform in front of so many people and achieve something so incredible as reaching the final. I think the whole experience taught me about discipline and consistency with food and fitness, which is really important when you’re performing at such an incredible level.
WHAT DO YOU EAT TO FUEL A WORKOUT
Before a workout, I make sure I get enough proteins, fats and fibre so things like eggs, chicken, avocado and plenty of fresh vegetables.
WHAT DO YOU EAT TO REFUEL AFTER A WORKOUT?
Post workout I’ll have more carbohydrates, so things like oats and rice. I try to avoid bread and pasta and have carbohydrates that will help me to progress. I’ll also have a whey protein shake with almond milk and make sure I stay hydrated with lots of water during and after a workout.
WHAT THREE EXERCISES DO YOU SWEAR BY?
I love working my posterior chain so the three exercises I love are a deadlift for the hamstrings, a glute bridge for your glutes and an upright row for your back. It’s really important when you are female to have a strong posterior as it sets you up for life changes, like carrying children and general daily activity.
HOW CAN WE BUILD A BODY LIKE GEMMA?
Ha! You can read my new book, The Ultimate Body Plan, which gives you everything you need to help lead a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Ultimately though you need to be the best version of you. It’s not achievable to be somebody else, I’ll never be petite because I’m 5ft 9” with broad shoulders!
WHAT DOES #BALANCE LOOK LIKE TO YOU?
Balance for me is being able to maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle rather than restricting yourself from things because you want to look a certain way. Fuel yourself with the right foods, keep active and treat yourself on occasion.
ARE THERE ANY HEALTHY HABITS YOU PUT YOUR SUCCESS DOWN TO?
Yes – staying hydrated! Fitwater is my go-to drink before and after I work out! It really helps to replenish the electrolytes my body has lost during a tough workout.
