Meet nature’s guilt-free treat with a stellar fan club
Balance, in life, is important. Yes, go to the gym, eat healthily and enjoy activities that nourish the heart and soul. But if you feel a burning desire to blow off some steam, then you absolutely should. Remember: all things in moderation. And if that means unwinding with a small glass of wine, rewarding a hard day’s graft with some dark chocolate or increasing the enjoyment of a cinema trip with a side order of nachos, then do it – and don’t beat yourself up about it.
SNACKS WITHOUT GUILT
Alas, it seems we Britons excel when it comes to this ‘self-flagellation’. Modern guilt means a whopping 80% of us say no to things that make us happy, according to a recent survey carried out by the Almond Board of California. Those surveyed were most likely to decline plans with friends to cook at home (62%), say no to drinks with colleagues to get to a gym class (29%), or miss a gig or visit to the theatre (32%) because they think more they’ll feel better by choosing what they believe is the ‘healthier’ option, even if it’s not what they really want to do. Snacking is avoided, too, with 59% feeling guilty when they eat in between meals. If you’ve ever questioned yourself over snacking, then think again. Consultant Dietitian Lucy Jones says, ‘snacks are an excellent way to tide us over to our next meal and can be a healthy, forward-thinking option to be proud of, not kept under wraps. Opting for a nutrient-rich snack such as a handful of almonds, is a really convenient way to
make sure that you’re satisfying your hunger pangs and giving your body the
nutrients it needs.’
