Rising Star: Edeline Lee
‘I’m inspired by women – always women. When a woman chooses her clothing, she is thinking of the things she needs to do in this dress, the places she will go, how comfortable she needs to be, the image she wants to project. It is so life-affirming to see real women in my clothes; to see them be useful to somebody’ — Edeline Lee
When your work is being worn by the likes of Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander and pop star Taylor Swift, you know you’re doing something right.
It’s some going, given Edeline Lee launched her eponymous line just four years ago, quickly becoming one of the industry’s most exciting new talents.
HOW DOES ART INSPIRE YOU?:
‘I’m always inspired by art. For Autumn Winter 2017, I was looking at the collage work and life story of Hannah Hoch.
She was one of the only women artists in the Berlin Dada movement. She made work about being a woman in her time, as Hitler was coming to power: female identity versus historical context. I felt that was so relevant in our time.’
WORDS OF WISDOM?:
‘I studied at Central Saint Martins and interned a lot. Internships are necessary in this business. At the end of the day, this is a craft and the only way to really learn is to do it, to make mistakes and learn how not to make the same mistakes the next time. I encourage any future designers: intern as much as possible.’
PROUDEST MOMENT?:
‘Seeing a beautiful, accomplished and powerful woman, who could have her pick of anything to wear, wearing my clothes is an absolute wonder and a humbling experience. All well-known women represent and mean something to the public psyche, that’s why we place celebrities on these pedestals.’
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?:
‘I’m looking forward to producing a pre-collection for the first time. Pre-Fall 2018. Watch this space!’
