‘Future of Renting’ panel event, brought to you by IKEA and The Design Museum

For too long, generation rent has put up with sub-standard conditions, because there were no alternatives. The current economic climate, UK housing crisis and un-affordability of homes means it’s harder to own than ever before and as a result, a large proportion of young people face living in rented accommodation for most of their lives. Brands and thought leaders need to respond and adapt to the changing needs of how people are living and cater to the modern world, to help form a progressive, alternative life at home for renters.

What to expect

Soaring house prices and stagnant wages put the dream of owning a home out of reach for many people, especially the young. Recent reports show that London will become a city of renters by 2025. How are designers responding to the new renting market?

‘Generation rent’ has put up with sub-standard living conditions for far too long. It is imperative that designers, brands and thought leaders are responding to the growing demands of the rental market to create a fairer, more progressive and desirable life for home renters.

Speakers will reflect on how the home is being affected by fundamental shifts in the renting market and why product design needs to work harder than ever in rental accommodation to adhere to flexible/fluid living situations.

• Maria Jonsson, IKEA – Expert in IKEA’s annual Life at Home Report – research that identifies five core emotional needs connected to the home
• Nick Lobo Brennan, Apparata – architect currently working with British artist Grayson Perry on an affordable housing scheme with integrated studios in London
